Tommy Tausis

Postat 2026/09/03 av Sören Alverfeldt2026/09/03

Tommy Tausis – En eminent trumslagare.
Bildjournalen 1966/Idolnytt 1967

Tommy föddes i Södertälje 22 mars 1946.

Han började spela i band som Coronados, The Customs – vilka längre fram bytte namn till Guy and the Turks – Jan Rodhe & The Wild Ones, The Best och Strangers.

Chester ”Howling Wolf” Burnetts Back Door Man.

Bandet byter intressant nog trummis direkt i Popside.

På Bildis flexiskiva kör bandet The Man You’ll Been Looking For.

Nämnda år bl a The Spotnicks Live in Japan och Spotnicks in Acapulco. 1967 deltar han och Spotnicks även i kultrullen Drra på. 1968 släpptes albumen The Spotnicks in The Groove samt The Spotnicks by Request ut.

The Spotnicks Back in The Race, gavs sen ut 1970 men på hösten samma år läggs gruppen ner.

Men 30 mars 2022 avlider sorgligt nog Tommy Tausis.

My Tribute To Les Paul”.

Bo Hansén, who became a close friend of Bo Winberg in the early 1960s, has provided me with these descriptions of the equipment used during various periods for recordings with The Rebels, The Frazers and The Spotnicks with Bo Winberg as engineer.
Bo Hansén is an expert in sound engineering and everything to do with recording equipment. He has worked as a sound engineer both at live shows and in the studio.
He was the one who helped Bo Winberg with the recordings of his very last creation ”My Tribute To Les Paul”..

INSPELNINGAR MED THE REBELS

1959-60

Erdmanns Grammofonstudio

Erdmann’s recording studio
In the basement of Erdmanns Music Store, which was located at Kungsgatan 65 (61-67) in Gothenburg, there was a recording studio where The Rebels (Bo Starander and Björn Thelin and later also Bo Winberg) used to be.
The recording equipment consisted of a Lyrec SV2/W25 engraving equipment for 78-rpm vinyl records during the 1940s and 50s, but which was later supplemented in the 50s with Lyrec TR2 and TR4/AR2 tape recorders and Neumann U47 condenser microphones. This was the equipment that was used for The Rebels’ recordings.

INSPELNINGAR MED THE FRAZERS

1960

(Here the recordings were made on a Tandberg tape recorder model 6 with ”sound-on-sound” in mono.
Other equipment was a small home-built passive mixer with four inputs and a home-built echo machine as well as a Neumann U47 condenser microphone.)

INSPELNINGAR MED THE SPOTNICKS

1961

(Probably about the same equipment as in the plastics factory, that is a Tandberg model 6 tape recorder, a home-built passive mixer, a home-built echo machine and a Neumann U47 condenser microphone.)

1962

(Tape recorders may have been two Tandberg model 6 and model 62/64 to be able to do ”sound-on-sound” between two tape recorders, and later also a Revox F36 tape recorder.
Now Bo’s home-built preamplifier with built-in echo machine was also used (the same one he used on live performances).
The microphones were Neumann U47 and Shure 545.)

1964-66

(A new preamplifier with external Echolette S NG51 echo machine, and somewhat later a newer more professional tape recorder Teac R310. Otherwise, about the same equipment as before.)

1967-68

Studion ligger på 2:a våningen men kontrollrummet är belägen i Bos bostadsrum i 1:a våningen.

Also Bo Winberg’s 3rd home-built preamplifier (the slim version) and various recording devices and echo chambers.
Now also two Neumann U47 and AKG C60 condenser microphones.
The studio is on the 2nd floor but the control room is located in Bo’s room on the 1st floor.)

RECORDING LOCATIONS

Postat 2026/03/30 av Sören Alverfeldt2026/05/14

I have tried to identify the studios and other recording locations that The Spotnicks have used since the time with The Rebels to Bo Winberg’s very last work My Tribute To Les Paul and also document which songs were recorded where and here is the result of my research.

It turned out to be a little more difficult than I had hoped because there is several contradictory information in circulation in different contexts, especially when it comes to recordings during the period 1962 – 64, and I have had to make some of my own assumptions as to what is most likely.

This applies, for example, to what the group recorded at Levy’s Sound Studios in London (for Oriole Records) in October 1962. There is information that they recorded 10 songs for the album In London but also that there were 18 in total.
I have decided to register 17 recorded songs at that session, but I have to make a reservation about that. If there are fewer than 17 the alternative recording location is Europafilm’s Studios in Mariehäll in Stockholm, but I do not know which songs it would be in that case.

Other information that appears is that the recordings for the album In Spain took place in Gothenburg, but the truth is that it was recorded in Europafilm’s Studios, which also applies to In Stockholm and parts of In Berlin.

The record company Karusell did not have its own studio so their recordings were mostly made in Europafilm’s Studios. Bo Winberg did not have equipment to make stereo recordings until 1965, and before that, mono recordings were the norm.

However, there are a number of mono recordings from the years 1961 to 1964 that were converted to stereo afterwards, so called ”electronic stereo”. This applies, for example, to Orange Blossom Special and The Rocket Man which are available in such stereo versions on In London but also for a few other songs.

Lars Åkerström’s book about The Spotnicks mentions that Bo Winberg and Göran ”Sam” Samuelsson together formed the studio Maulen Records in 1966, but since I do not know what was possibly recorded there, I have omitted it from my documentation for the time being.

INSPELNINGSPLATSER

2024-10-27 THE SPOTNICKS på LORENSBERGSTEATERN, GÖTEBORG

Postat 2024/10/29 av Sören Alverfeldt2025/01/08

Go to English version

Under dryga två timmar framfördes många välkända låtar ur The Spotnicks repertoar.

På scenen: The Spotnicks

Fullspikad salong.

Lite rörigt i mitt tycke, men ok.

Emellanåt sticker Ove in läckra fills i Lennarts solospel.

THE SWEDISH ROCK ARCHIVE

The Swedish Rock Archive has published the following news on its website and Facebook on October 15, 2024:

At the Swedish Rock Archive’s last board meeting, Sören Alverfeldt was elected as an honorary member of the archive.
Through his wide network and knowledge of the group The Spotnicks, Sören has helped preserve large amounts of material from the group’s career.
The board would like to express a big thank you to Sören for his efforts in the preservation of Swedish popular music history.
In the picture, we see Sören with some of the thousands of donations that have come into the archive. A glittering stage costume and a Japanese gold record.

This award was absolutely nothing that I had expected or even dreamed of. It came as a total surprise and of course I am very honoured.
First of all, I am proud that our work has made such a big impression on the Swedish Rock Archive’s organization that it is expressed in this award. This is not only my merit but also Börje Norén’s. He will also take the credit and I know he will.
I want to say a big thanks to all of you who have donated many interesting items to ”Preserve The Spotnicks for the future” which Börje and I started in the fall of 2020 in collaboration with the Swedish Rock Archive!

Piratkopiering (Piracy)

Piracy, i.e. copying of material that has been published commercially, not to be confused with Bootlegs, which are music recordings that are not official (live concerts, films, etc.). Both forms are illegal, as they infringe copyright and are distributed for financial gain by someone other than the creator or their representatives (usually the artist or record label).

In The Spotnicks’ case, there are some examples of pirated copies from countries like Russia and Brazil. In addition, it can be assumed that the flexi discs issued in Poland and the former Soviet Union are not official releases either.

It may seem wrong to include these illegal pirated copies in a discography, but since they show that The Spotnicks also made an impression in these countries, it still feels justified.

Flexiskivor (Flexidiscs)

A flexi disc is a type of vinyl disc made of plastic and which is thinner than a regular vinyl record, usually no thicker than a sheet of paper. Although the records do not break so easily, they are otherwise not as durable as the vinyl discs due to their thickness.

In the former Soviet Union, the usual vinyl records were not available. There, only flexi discs applied, and in 1966 it became possible to play and listen to some Spotnick records of that type. There were a number of variants in different colors and shapes that contained a total of nine Spotnicks songs. The discs were single-sided engraved with only one song each. The album covers in most cases had cartoon, period-typical military motifs. The songs found on these flexi discs are Recado, Big Jump, I’ll remember you, Busted, Mood of Asia, Happy Guitar, Green Eyes, Amapola and Space Walk.

A few years earlier, flexi discs had been issued in Poland in the form of a letter or postcards. The records contained one or two songs and in The Spotnicks’ case it is Amapola, Havah Nagila, The Old Spinning Wheel, The Rocket Man and Johnny Guitar.
There is also a double-sided Polish disc that is shared with another artist where The Spotnicks contribution is Amapola, but here it has been named Annapola. On another record the orchestra is named The Sportnicks so there are some misspellings.

Whether these flexi discs are pirated copies or official releases is not known, but it probably leans towards the former.

Also in Japan there are some released flexi discs with The Spotnicks but it is difficult to identify the label, year, content and other facts and therefore they are for the time being excluded from this report.

NOT FOR SALE

Postat 2024/09/27 av Sören Alverfeldt2024/12/21

There are a number of records with The Spotnicks that were not for sale on the official market. Often these records are called ”Promos” but this does not always mean that they were intended for ”Promotion” of upcoming releases.

Instead, it may be sample pressings for tests or to be circulated between the record company’s various departments for review, control and gathering of opinions or to be archived.

There are several examples of records intended for marketing that were mostly given out for free for playing on various radio stations, but there are also examples of records that would be played in jukeboxes in cafeterias, bars etc.
German Polydor issued a number of so-called Information Records with the purpose of informing the bransch about current releases.
Some companies and radio stations made their own productions for advertising purposes were distributed free of charge to customers and listeners.

There are thus many different variants of ”Promos” and for The Spotnicks it’s the Test samples that dominates but all types are represented.

For collectors, this type of advance made records are very attractive because they are rare due to relatively small editions.

This report also includes the records that the members made for own use and therefore were not for sale on the market either. There are the two records from 1959 and 1960 with The Rebels plus the so-called The ”Gröna Lund record” from 1965.

RECORDS & TAPES

Postat 2024/08/21 av Sören Alverfeldt2026/03/27

Välj svensk version

The discography includes roughly 1,600 records and tapes released in a total of 48 countries (including the former Soviet Union, Southern Rhodesia and East Germany), of which about a third are releases where THE SPOTNICKS (incl. THE FEENADES) appear with one or more songs together with other artists and groups.

It all starts with the group THE REBELS – which was the embryo of what became THE SPOTNICKS – and extends to BO WINBERG’s very last recordings and everything in between with THE SPOTNICKS and the group’s various aliases (THE FEENADES, THE SHY ONES, BO WINBERGx4 +2, JAMES GEORGE and THE YOUNG CATS and THE ROCKIN’ COWHANDS).

It includes 602 song titles in the original, which with alternative versions (re-recordings, live versions, backing tracks, etc.) add up to 894 different variations:

SPOTNICKS SONGS

The ”big Spotnick nations”, in addition to SWEDEN, are BELGIUM, FRANCE, JAPAN, THE NETHERLANDS, GREAT BRITAIN and GERMANY and for these countries the reports are divided by respective media type, while for the other countries all editions are reported in a single report.

All reports are in pdf format because the discography’s database program is not able to create good printouts in e.g. Word or Html format. Here, unfortunately, there are some cosmetic errors regarding page breaks.

You are welcome to share the content.
I have to reserve for possible errors but hopefully they are minimized after the last revision.

SKIVOR & BAND

Postat 2024/08/20 av Sören Alverfeldt2026/03/27

Go to English version

EN FANTASTISK DONATION — A GREAT DONATION

The Spotnicks medverkar i filmen, presenteras av TV-profilen Olle Björklund och framför låten My Bonny.

The Spotnicks har fått namnet The Spotfields (!?)

Does anyone know what this could be?

”Just For Fun” is a 1963 English musical comedy film produced by Columbia Pictures.
The Spotnicks appear in the film, are presented by TV profile Olle Björklund and perform the song My Bonny.

Below is a copy of a promotional leaflet for the same film but in a Danish (Scandinavian) version.
In the leaflet there are several named people who are not in the English original, among them some Swedish artists such as Little Gerhard, Siw Malmkvist and Gunnar Wiklund (misspelled as Wirklund).
Here is also included Jan Höiland from Norway.
The Spotnicks have been named The Spotfields (!?)
On the back of the folder (page 8) it says that the film’s soundtrack is published by Nordisk Polyphon, but it is unclear if that means the original or this Nordic version.

– Does anyone know if this Danish or Scandinavian version became a reality or was it just something that stayed in the idea stage?
(To my question, Siw Malmkvist has replied that she has no idea about this and cannot explain why her picture is included in the folder.)

– Could it be that a Nordic version has been produced without the knowledge and consent of the artists concerned?

It would be very interesting if someone has answers to these questions!
If so, please contact us by email to webmaster@spotnicks.net

THE 1983 TV SPECIAL (INTERVIEWS)

Postat 2023/07/14 av Sören Alverfeldt2023/07/15

Välj svensk version

In December 1983, Sveriges Television broadcast a one-hour TV special with The Spotnicks (Link to video with the TV-program)

During the preparation of the program, a man named Gösta Hansson did several interviews. They were filmed and then he wrote them down verbatim (!) on a typewriter to then selected which episodes would be included in the program.
Gösta Hansson was also responsible for the program’s script in its entirety.

It is Björn Thelin, Bob Lander, Bo Winberg and Jimmie Nicol who are interviewed and tell their stories.

One can ask why Ove Johansson, Derek Skinner and Peter Winsnes didn’t get some time in the program as well as Magnus Hellsberg and Tommy Tausis and maybe a few more.
In retrospect, it is stated that it was impossible to get the group’s (then) more than 20-year career into 45 minutes (the last quarter of an hour was a concert with the current constellation at the time). It would have required significantly longer program time for that.

Everything that was recorded was not shown in the TV show but has been some well-kept ”secrets” until now.

Here below are transcripts of the original notes and basically nothing has been changed other than corrections of spelling errors and various edits for better readability.

A BIG THANK YOU to Lenah Winberg for the donation to the Swedish Rock Archive of both Gösta Hansson’s notes and his TV program script!

I apologize for possible poor English. The translations are made with the help of Google translation.

INTERVIEW WITH JIMMIE NICOL

Postat 2023/07/14 av Sören Alverfeldt2023/07/14

GÖSTA:
When were you in The Spotnicks?

JIMMIE:
1965 to 1967.

GÖSTA:
How did you came to The Spotnicks?

JIMMIE:
It was marvellous, I recieved two thelephone calls one day. One to do West Side Story and the other one to come with Spotncis. So I decided to come with Spotnicks.

GÖSTA:
You haven’t changed your mind?

JIMMIE:
No, I had reached as far as I could go as a studio musician in England-and I wanted to get away, I wanted to see the world and Spotnicks offered me that opportunity. And 24 years of age it was time that I started to learn and see how others cultures are and see how other people live and the opportunity Spotnicks gave me was exactly that.

GÖSTA:
What was your first impression of Spotnicks?

JIMMIE:
Unusual…
At that particular time they were riding extremely high in many countries: Japan, Mexico. We went to Hawaii and they were wonderful people. When I first came here: the reception: the smörgårdsbord, the sill, its really wonderful. They really were true ambassadors, Swedish ambassadors. One could not help get the feeling of true hospitality of the Sswedish people. Wonderful.

GÖSTA:
What did you remember most from your time in Spotnicks?

JIMMIE:
Friendship and travel of course and Roland Ferneborg, the manager, He was like a godfather to all of us. Of course we had our ups and downs as any group of people living so close to each other do – travelling, but it was really wonderful.

GÖSTA:
Jimmie, can you descibe The Spotnick’s sound?

JIMMIE:
Spotnick’s sound is very unusual. The nearest thing is the Shadows but musically there is a tremendous difference. Bosse has a sound, he created it from when he was very young he’s kept it. I was very glad to hear it hasn’t changed.
I haven’t heard Spotnicks – as I said – in 19 years. It still is the same.
Quite they progressed but they changed with the time. They have modern music, they play modern tunes, but still that sound is still there.
They’re distinct, they’re – ever original. They are the only ones in the world.
There will only be one Bosse Winberg in the world.

GÖSTA:
Jimmie, you were drummer once in another band. I’ve forgotten the name… What was the name again?

JIMMIE:
I was drummer in a lots of groups. I’m thinking the one you are thinking about is The Beatles?

GÖSTA:
Oh yes.

JIMMIE:
You remember?

GÖSTA:
Can you say anything about that time? With the Beatles?

JIMMIE:
Can I say..?
I was… Again I received a telephone call to deputies for Ringo Starr. It was cleared by the powers to be and… really… truly.
I went with them for three weeks. We went to Holland, Denmark, Australia and Hong Kong.
Hong Kong they died a terrible death.
Australia was fantastic. When one play with them you can’t hear anything. They are thousands of people. Wonderful reception everywhere.
Musically not stimulating at all.

Presumably the interview with Jimmie was longer than this but the notes are missing for the rest.

INTERVIEW WITH BJÖRN THELIN AND BOB LANDER

Postat 2023/07/14 av Sören Alverfeldt2023/07/14

/Be Bop A Lula is playing/

BJÖRN:
This is actually The Rebels – it’s me and Bob playing. I play backing guitar or lead guitar and double bass and you (Bob) play on a chair and beat and comp.

BOB:
Yes, you sing and I sing the second part and so on, but you also play solo guitar in the background.

BJÖRN:
Yes yes, if you can now call it solo guitar.

BOB:
Advanced…

BJÖRN:
This was done in Erdman Music Shop, in a shop that was here in Gothenburg, and I want to say that… if you bring this up, I think it was very interesting to do this.
And I think that… I would like to point out that Erdman meant a lot to me and Bobban, that is, morally and financially. Well, not that he gave us money, but we never had to pay for studio time, for example, and it was a lot of money.
And I think that if Erdmans had been in Stockholm next to a gramophone company, I actually think there would have been a record out of this and then I don’t think Spotnicks would have ever come into being, that is.
I do not think so. Or what do you say?

BOB:
Well, it would have been exactly as you said, but there were no companies in Gothenburg.

GÖSTA:
Okay, so we’ll take this while you were in Mexico and followed the climb of Karelia on the charts in Japan.

BJÖRN:
I remember one thing that was quite funny and I thought they were an interesting thing. When we saw that the song was climbing up in Japan at the hotel and when we were sitting in the cafeteria in the lobby of the hotel, Winberg said this: that if we sell so that we get a gold record in Japan, everyone should get a brand new Folkwagon.
And I especially thank you for that. (Laughter) Yes, retroactively that is, I might get it if… /mumble/

Now follows an episode about England, Stickan Andersson, Berlin, etc. but it is not reproduced in detail in the notes, only as a brief summary:

GÖSTA:
England memories?

BOB:
Kicked out, tired, Bosse wasn’t feeling well, called Bruce Baxter, scratching at the pub. Artists like Bobby Rydell, Helena Shapiro, Brian Poole & Tremeloes. Package show, the bassist who froze to death…

BOB & BJÖRN:
M1… Beatles…

GÖSTA:
First Manager?

BJÖRN:
The knitting… (a longer outlay)

GÖSTA:
Berlin?

BOB & BJÖRN:
Tough job incredibly educational, twist comp, Ove tired in the arm, insider for musicians… (both talking in each other’s mouths)

INTERVIEW WITH BJÖRN THELIN

Postat 2023/07/14 av Sören Alverfeldt2023/07/16

GÖSTA:
Björn, how did you start with music?

BJÖRN:
Yes I started…
It came quite naturally because everyone in the family played and sang and I grew up with that then. The interest was already there then.
And then… Yes, I became interested and so and so I sat and played and learned a little more on the guitar. Yes, I were interested in general, thought that was exciting.

GÖSTA:
How did you meet Bob?

BJÖRN:
Yes, I met Bob at school, at Sannaskolan.
My classmates found him unbearable. That he was fretful and then they asked me to deal with this Bob and so I went out to meet him.
And then I said this: ”now we have to go down to the toilet and talk about this”. Not violently, but discuss this and then we realized that we had the same interests – music then – and then after that thing so we became very good comrades.

GÖSTA:
And started playing?

BJÖRN:
Yes, exactly.

GÖSTA:
What did you play then?

BJÖRN:
Yes, mostly own twelves as they call it, blues and own compositions.
And then there were certain songs stuck in the hood that you sat and tried to bring out musically. There were no sheet music or anything like that back then, so you had to take it out by ear. And it was exciting.

GÖSTA:
Say a song that you remember.

BJÖRN:
Yes this one… (singing) Östan om solen (East of the sun)… or something like that…
It was typically that style that was popular. Because then rock hadn’t caught on at that time.

GÖSTA:
How did you get into rock music?

BJÖRN:
Yes, Bob, he went to America with his family and I went out on the sea and when Bob came back, he had a lot of plates with him. Everly Brothers and Eddie Cockran.
They played music that you had never heard before.
I went around Africa and Spain and the most you heard was Evert Taube (a Swedish troubadour) on jukeboxes. So there were old things in those days.

GÖSTA:
So you started again and started again and started a band. What was it called?

BJÖRN:
Then we called ourselves The Rebels, because we thought we were a bit… We wanted to do a bit different things, music… Two guitars and two voices then.
It was a little different. It was exciting.

GÖSTA:
So you expanded. You weren’t just two, you eventually became four.

BJÖRN:
Yes, it was… Yes, this goes quickly…
Yes, we Bosse Winberg then and a guy who lived in Mölndal called Bo Wahlberg and then we started rehearsing and we thought it was quite funny and then there were a lot of rock band competitions like this back then.
And then we were going to compete in Bildjournalen’s rock band competition and during that time there were Rock-Ragge, Rock-Boris…
There were rock kings in almost every community and it was exciting stuff and we stood there and won that competition.
But before that a lot of things had happened. Before you got there… among other things, you had (laughs) I don’t know, I’m not going to say that…

GÖSTA:
But now we have to get into what’s going on with Rock-Teddy.

BJÖRN:
Yes, but…

GÖSTA:
It was for this, right?

BJÖRN:
Well, well…it was this Rock-Teddy. You should have a name then, but I don’t know…
It turned out then that I would sing and yes, and show on stage then. That was the style back then. And that’s how the name came about. Rock Teddy.
And then we went around and played and improved, I think, musically. And then…
Yes, a lot of things happened after that.

GÖSTA:
Tell us a little about when Bosse joined the band.

BJÖRN:
Winberg?

GÖSTA:
Yes.

BJÖRN:
Yes, Bob and I had been playing together for a long time, and now and then a guy called Bosse Winberg came along and he played some guitar.
And he built amplifiers. He was good at it. And he had a car which was very unusual for teenagers at that time.
We rehearsed and played and he also had records that were interesting and that’s how it came about.
And then came… a fisherman’s boy, Bo Wahlberg in Mölndal, he has quit. He had a fish auction early in the morning, he couldn’t take it and then I got hold of this guy called Ove Johansson. He lived in Gamlestan (part of Gothenburg) and so the band became…eee… Frazers, I think…
So we kept going. Yes, we made an effort and had some work and played and rehearsed. That was most of it.

GÖSTA:
What was your repertoire as The Frazers?

BJÖRN:
Yeah, it was very Everly Brothers, Eddie Cockran. So, there was one that Winberg was very fond of, his name was Duande Eddy I think it was.
And that was the repertoire that hadn’t really come here, hadn’t really made it here, I think. But it was on records that Bob and Winberg had.

GÖSTA:
Can you say that when you were Rock-Teddy, a kind of rock king, as it was called then. Were you popular as a rock king?

BJÖRN:
I don’t want to comment on it myself, but yes, I think so.
It went very well and you got a lot of pats on the back and many offers.

GÖSTA:
Then as Frazers you recorded a record and where did you do it?

BJÖRN:
You mean this old 78 rpm record?

GÖSTA:
Yes exactly. The record.

Here Gösta and Björn talk past each other a little; Gösta about The Frazers, Björn about The Rebels.

BJÖRN:
Yes, there was a record store on Kungsgatan called Erdmans Musik and old Mr. Erdman there.
We then entered his gramophone shop and tried out guitars. Very exciting at the time.
Then heard about this and asked if we wanted to come downstairs, because he had a studio there.
We followed Erman down and we were very impressed in this studio, what I thought myself, very advanced things.
And now we did a test recording with two-part vocals and guitars. And he thought that was exciting.
His wife, among others, stood up on the stairs and shouted to Mr. Erdman that now you can come up, there are customers in the store. And then he thought that she can take care of that because now I have found something else. And then it developed so that I played double bass and guitar. Bob got hold of an old stool and played with beaters on it and played the backing guitar as well. And so we recorded this then.
I thought that was great fun.
And Erdman stood for a lot. A very, very likable man.

GÖSTA:
Then this music was to be published, but the gramophone company didn’t like the name Frazers, but what did they want to call you?

BJÖRN:
No, it wasn’t this record they wanted to release.

GÖSTA:
So it didn’t come out…

BJÖRN:
No, no.. no.. it’s only on tape now. No, it was long after this…

Now the conversation finally turns to The Frazer’s first recordings

GÖSTA:
Then we can take that story with Frazer’s first recording, which would later be published.
And this story of how it became Spotnick’s. Can you tell me?

BJÖRN:
Yes, we had problems with rehearsal rooms.
There were some. Burås ungdomsgård, for example, but there were many bands fighting for times and opportunities to rehearse.
Then we met a man at a gig who had a plastic factory on Göteborgsvägen – I think – and he offered us to rehearse there.
And we did that at night because then the factory was closed.
And then did in a tape on a Tandberg cassette player. Old Spinning Wheel and Ghostriders In The Sky. And two more. Old Man River I think it was and My Old Kentucky Home) and we sent this up to the gramophone company Karusell as it was then called.
And they became very interested in this and asked what we had recorded this on. And then Winberg said we had recorded this on a Lyrek, I think, a Lyrek machine.
It sounded a little better then and they thought it sounded exciting and then a representative of the record company came and when they heard that we had done it on a Tandberg they thought it was quite well done.
And then the Spotnicks thing started.

GÖSTA:
What did you think of the new name?

BJÖRN:
Well, it was nothing especially good.
I thought it was a very strange name. I didn’t get attached to bands at all. And Spotnick’s…
But it’s clear that they had good persuasiveness and all that and so in the end it turned out that way.

GÖSTA:
In 1961 you were on a TV programme. What did you do then? Oh what happened then?

BJÖRN:
Yes, it was then a TV program here in Gothenburg.
Yes, we were going to do two melodies in a TV show and we didn’t have direct stage clothes then. Looked rather boring and then someone found out that Povel Ramel (a Swedish revue artist and all-round artist) had some fantasy costumes that we could then borrow. They were spacesuits with four arms, very warm and strange.
And we did this program then and at the same time we were photographed in the studio and it ended up on the cover of the record that was released in England. Which went up on the list there.
And then we got an offer to go to England on tours and before it took off we got a telegram: ”Don’t forget the spacesuits” and then we sat questioning and wondered which spacesuits they mean?
And then they had that cover.

INTERVIEW WITH BO WINBERG

Postat 2023/07/14 av Sören Alverfeldt2023/07/14

BO:
Rock-Teddy and the Blue Caps. We came up with that name when we were going to perform at a rock band competition in the Concert Hall in Gothenburg.
And then we went up to a company that sold caps to get four caps – or five – I don’t remember.
And they said up there that, well, but if you don’t win then?
Yes, but we certainly do. The others are probably not ery good.
And, yes, we won and we got to keep them there.

GÖSTA:
And what competition was it?

BO:
It was Bildjournalen that arranged it. Would choose a rock king in the city.

GÖSTA:
Björn was then renamed Rock-Teddy. Where did you get that name?

BO:
He used to be called Teddy.
The intention was that Bob would actually sing, but then it was in order to look a bit tough-ish and he (Björn) did that.
So it was decided the day before that, no, you (Björn) sing instead.

GÖSTA:
Down in this music store that has a recording studio downstairs, did some stuff happen there to do with Spotnicks?

BO:
Yes, Bob and Björn practiced together there and I knew them that way – or we had played together before – but they didn’t have amplifiers.
They had electric guitars, while I had built an amplifier.
So I got in (laughs) that way.
And then there was this man who owned this, a nice man, so I got to live with his studio-quality tape recorder. There are actually some of those left in this house too, I’ve seen.

GÖSTA:
You built your first amplifiers for the orchestra.
How did you get into this amp building thing?

BO:
Yeah, it was pretty easy with the amps.
There was nothing to buy that was good and because I worked in the radio business and knew that, I could build stronger stuff than other bands could, huh.
And get the kind of sound I wanted because what was there was too jazzy and more grumpy.

GÖSTA:
Tell us about your first record The Old Spinning Wheel.

BO:
The Old Spinning Wheel, it was made in a plastic factory where we were rehearsing.
Made on two ordinary home tape players and then I had built a mixer for this and a somewhat strange echo machine. It was also not available to buy at the time.
And then I mixed, worked with this and then I went down to this music store and then copied to a master tape that then went with 15 inch full tracks.
Because I had been told by the gentlemen at the record company up in Stockholm that it was not possible to make professional recordings on home machines, but if they got a real master tape, they would go for it.
That’s how it happened.

GÖSTA:
You were called Frazers when you did this recording.

BO:
Yes.

GÖSTA:
How did the switch to Spotnicks go?

BO:
It happened in such a way that when we got the record contract, we were up in Stockholm and got to watch them engrave, and it was quite fun.
So said one of the technicians there ”Frazers, that sound riduculous”.
And at that time this Russian Sputnik was up and he came up with the name Spotnicks.
It was probably more international and original. And I agree with that.

GÖSTA:
Then we jump to Germany, where you went to, according to your manager, get some stage experience. Tell us a little about the first Germany gig at Casa Leon.

BO:
Yes, it was a hard time.
We played from eight o’clock in the evening until four in the morning and had a salary of 25 marks a day and lived in a boarding house.
On Sunday it was tea dance then we played between five and seven. Then a break and then eight to four.
And our manager went there with ”people in the bransch” as they say.
Then they came up to us there, we were playing dance music and said ”Yes, now guys it’s time for the show. Get down and change your clothes”.
And it was hot as hell there but…
It was useful in that way that you had to learn that there were steps and a lot of nonsense like this waving guitars.
But we got along very well, so it was an awfully useful time. But very tiring…

GÖSTA:
Then came this with spacesuits. Can you draw the story behind them?

BO:
The spacesuits came about in this way so that we would be on TV.
And since we had the name Spotnicks, a gentleman here on TV came up with the idea that it’s a very fun name, but then we get to put spacesuits on the boys.
So some spacesuits were hired and we got to wear them in this TV show.
Then pictures were taken, so it ended up on an EP cover, as I remember, which then came out in different parts of the world and then it haunted us.
Because when TV was to be made elsewhere, it was ”well they take the spacesuits with them” as we didn’t have any. So we had to sew that up.
And in them we stood well and sweated for 7-8 years before we got rid of them.
So I didn’t think those were very funny.

GÖSTA:
Can you tell us a little about the first visit to England?

BO:
Yes.. it was (pause). It was quite tough because you didn’t have any better touring vehicles and in England it was cold.
And it was TV. Quite a lot of TV because we were on the list.
And the memory I have of this was that it was a hell of a ride up after this M1 and A1 so…
I was probably not aware of what it meant to be on this English list and not used to that kind of touring life – so we had been in Germany in one place and then it’s hux flux a new hall every day.

GÖSTA:
You did an LP in London. Tell us a little about it.

BO:
To record an LP in London was something quite amazing because then the English were so far ahead. Almost all records in Sweden came from England or America.
So it was great fun to get into a big, big studio and lots and lots of buttons and lots of equipment, but stressful.
We got into the studio in the evening and were going to make a whole LP in one stretch. Back then, you only recorded the entire background on two channels, and then any vocals or solo guitar were added afterwards, so it wasn’t like today.
But it was a rather unusual situation for me at the time, who had been working and putting together recordings myself, that there was a producer and a technician.
But it sounded… To our ears, it was fantastic and great fun, huh.

GÖSTA:
Then we jump to Olympia in Paris and now I want you to tell the truth about the headlines in the newspapers about the wireless transmitter at Olympia. The plain truth.

BO:
The wireless transmitter is true, but that it was at the Olympia is not true because we were sitting in a recording studio doing a French LP and of course there were a lot of press people.
There was no power switch for this transmitter, it was on a volume control and there was a guy there from the press who tried my guitar and had the transmitter on. Then the police came in.
That wasn’t a particularly good transmitter, it was buzzing around on a lot of frequencies at once.
And with these policemen coming in and there being press there and (the French gramophone company boss was a fan of lying…) so I know how things work in the press and so on and how to do PR then.
Finally when it came to Sweden it was Olympia and k-piste.
And then I’ve tried to edit this story and I’m now quite tired of it.
I have been asked this question ever since so this is the truth.

GÖSTA:
The experience from the visit to Japan?

BO:
Yes, it was a great experience.
So we had been sitting and were late at Kastrup because it was fog and snow. So we arrived half a day late.
And when this plane rolled in, a lot of people are standing up on this balcony where you can look at the planes with huge banners and signs and Japanese characters.
We didn’t understand anything.
And when we entered through customs and passports. It went as quickly as the eye and then into a VIP room, it was full of photographers, TV, radio and champagne, as I remember.
So we had no idea that it was such a big deal, it was the biggest gathering I’ve ever been part of in my entire life.
And then the next day there was a press conference at the hotel with several hundred little gentlemen who sat and asked us questions and we sat at a few tables in a large congress hall.
It was an experience. I must never be a part of that, sooner or later.

GÖSTA:
From the stage performance, what do you remember there?

BO:
Yes, standing on a Japanese stage, there is nothing like it.
Yes, the closest would be Olympia in Paris, although the Japanese stages are even bigger and they are perfectionists. They arranged everything. Lights and backgrounds. And everything was so well organized that…
Yes, it was absolutely incredible.
You have to go there for that, stand on a stage to experience it. And I can’t compare it to anything else.

GÖSTA:
Why aren’t you bigger here in Sweden?

BO:
That is a difficult question. If I could answer that, I would have played more here at home, but there has always been less publicity.
And also with the kind of lists that existed in the past, so with instrumental songs it was very difficult to get in.
Ideally, you would sing in Swedish, which we consistently refused to do.
But there we have also been lucky in such a way that if you play instrumental music to get out, for example, in Japan or in France or whatever country it is, and I think it was probably more that Sweden was probably a little behind what they did abroad with whole PR stuff, etc, etc…
And things went a bit briskly there, so we were more abroad than at home.

GÖSTA:
So can you tell us a bit about the jam (with The Shadows) up at your home on Kopparslagargatan?

BO:
We met in a music store.
And we were, so to speak, colleagues, and then it was decided that we would meet at my house.
And we did and as is natural then as when musicians get together, there were instruments and there were amplifiers, it jammed long into the night.
My neighbors on the second floor came down and complained and I said ”do you know who’s here”?
No, they didn’t know that. ”It’s The Shadows and now we’re going to play here. I’ll pay, you can go to a hotel”.
They actually did.
Then at five o’clock in the morning the police came because then it was hot in there and we had opened the windows and they also thought this was funny, but said: ”Close the windows, because it can be heard all the way to Mölndal”.
We jammed until seven in the morning. It was very nice.

INTERVIEW WITH BOB LANDER

Postat 2023/07/14 av Sören Alverfeldt2023/07/14

GÖSTA:
Yes, Bob, when did you start playing music?

BOB:
I… It was a happy Christmas Eve when I was about 11 years old – I got a guitar for Christmas. If you consider that not many people in my family played so maybe it was a way of trying to keep me in in the evenings, I don’t know. But at least it was a happy moment.
And then it was like that at school, that’s where you could go to guitar lessons and start learning to play according to sheet music, and I did that at the age of 12 and went for a year.
I was also in a performance at the Concert Hall where there were six of us playing classical guitar. And then my grandmother was there, I remember, and she had a whistle with her that she blew. I remember that right now when I talk about this now.
But then the patience disappeared a little. It must have been a bit slow to learn to play the guitar that way.
And then I met Björn when we were about 14 years old.
We moved around town a bit so I had gone to a number of different schools. Then I ended up in a school where Björn also went. And we met and… Yes, there was probably a bit of a fight between the classes, a bit of a challenge fight, so Björn and I would somehow settle this and so we met in the toilet in the school yard.
But it turned out that he had an orchestral guitar at home that was much more awesome than the guitar I had at home, so we found a common interest.
And then it started seriously there somehow, and Björn was the one who taught me the first chord analyzes on the guitar, because you hadn’t been taught that at school.
So that’s where we started, so to speak…

GÖSTA:
What did you sing then? Sing and play?

BOB:
Björn he had… He had played with some guys before, so for me Björn was a terribly skilled guitarist and played solo guitar and played jazz twelves and all that sort of thing, we could say.
So that there was a lot of accompaniment and solo guitar in the beginning before we recorded some songs.
Swedish material wasn’t like that… There were no hit lists at the time, so there wasn’t enough Swedish material to go on.
You were a little influenced by the fact that you had heard a record from abroad then, especially from America. But we did some of our own songs, rock was starting to come around then.
Then we did a song called ”Shining Garden Reeling Blues”.
We didn’t know any English. It sounded, it tasted right in the mouth, that text. And then we did a song like that and we rocked to it and we stood opposite each other and swung back and forth.
We picked up a little of Gene Vincent like ”Step by step – Street by street”. It’s a ballad song like that, but emotional songs it was.

GÖSTA:
Then you were in the United States. What influences did you get from there?

BOB:
Yes, then my family emigrated.
Yes, my father first came to the USA then, then the rest of the family came over two months later and it was really a completely new life. It was brand new.
It was, what can one say.. It’s hard to say that there was little unemployment in the city we lived in, but there was a Swedish company that built fan systems, air conditioning for Greyhound buses, in that city. And the owner of that factory was Swedish so… Yes, one thing led to another so that I got a place at this factory and then you made some friends there.
There were those top ten lists back then, it was the Everly Brothers, Eddie Cochran. That was the kind of stuff that went on and we mustn’t forget Chuck Berry.
He was also very actual and then I bought a lot of singles.
I didn’t know then that we were going back home, it was meant to be here to live and live. But there I bought some singles and then sheet music was always relevant and if you could, you could also buy the sheet music with a picture of the artist and then you could play to the sheet music.
Then I knew some chord analysis because Björn and I had met and it’s clear, I missed Björn very much, because we had found each other in a natural way.
But later it happened that we went back home again and when we got home Björn had been at sea: He went to sea he had some records with him and I had some records from America with me and then we sat down and then we knew that: now it becomes real.
Then we played jazz, because then we had a goal in sight. And the repertoire we brought as it was very different here at home, so we played at youth clubs and such.
And then we took this name. We must have a name.
There were only two of us who went out, so we called ourselves The Rebels.
We thought our repertoire went well with that name. And then we played in places like Björngårdsvillan in Slottsskogen, youth places.
It was a fun time.

GÖSTA:
Then you eventually met Bosse Winberg.

BOB:
Yes, it evolved to…
I can’t really remember what it was like. But at least he appeared on Erdman’s music.
In any case, I found out that you could make your own lacquer disc. You could go down and sing straight to a 78-rpm record and take it home.
You were vain there and so it was clear that then you looked up Erdman’s music store and we discussed it a bit and then he said: ”Sure” and… I don’t know… I think it cost SEK 60 the time and get two tracks on each side.
But it turned out that he had a very different type of recordings then, like 0 Sole Mio.
There was a lot of stuff like this.
When we came down, he heard a very different music, so it ended up being the same as when we were there. Yes, two or three days a week, four or five hours each time and it cost nothing.
He got so interested in this and thought it was so good and right and we recorded some stuff.
Now most of this is gone, but we… I happened to find a tape that remains from that time where Björn and I play all the instruments ourselves. And it was professional equipment that was available, if you compare it to today’s situation, at that time it was definitely professional equipment in this small studio. Waidele (another Music Shop in Gothenburg) also had a similar phenomenon that you could go into a booth and you could sing but there was no tape player with it, but it went straight down to box engraved on a lacquer disc.
So that was sort of the difference.
And we were also at Waidele once when there were four of us.
But then the bassist couldn’t get a seat, so he was standing outside, so most of what you heard was just vocals then.
But Erdman had a real studio.
Yeah, Bosse then, yeah… I know I don’t really remember the exact story because it… Yeah, there was so much going on, but I think Bosse was down.
Bosse played with a Dixieland band. Played the piano there and I think he went down to buy sheet music for a couple of songs they were going to do – because Erdmans was the best stocked sheet music store in town.
And then he heard from the basement a music that apparently caught his ears.
Now today I know that he had attended M/S Gripsholm, so he had also been to America and was then very influenced by that music.
I think he found something that made sense when he was standing there. So then he asked to come down and look and I think that’s how we met.
So Bosse Winberg showed up in connection with what we were doing down there.

GÖSTA:
Then it changed from Fazers to Spotnicks and you weren’t too into that being called Spotnicks, were you?

BOB:
It was also like this that when Bosse came into the picture, we developed a bit musically.
There were three wishes and three desires. And Erdman, who was a good man.
You have to know that nobody had any money at the time, but then Bildjournalen had announced a rock band competition that would take place in the Consert Hall, and it was something that we definitely knew we had a chance to win and certainly did not want miss.
But as said where. There was no money. But Erdman, he knew the guy who owned Gulins (a clothing store) at the time, so he arranged for Gulins to put some clothes on us.
Now you can’t talk about advertising here, but then they also got to take some pictures of us here in some clothes and had a small ad in the newspaper that said…
They had corduroy caps they wanted to introduce that year, I remember. And then we used it.
And since it was a rock band competition, it was impossible for Björn and me to sing together, we had no chance of winning, we knew that. Now it was a question of rock and a one-man show and a comp. That’s why we picked Björn because he looked the coolest and then we simply named him Rock-Teddy and the rest of us called ourselves Blue Caps because we had these corduroy caps that were to be introduced.
So we took a picture of this in the GP. (talk about the ad).

GÖSTA:
How did that rock band competition go?

BOB:
Yes, I have to talk about that.
It was a long competition, two hours long, and the main attraction was Little Gerhard who, at that time, was Sweden’s rock king.
Then there was Rock-Boris… And yes, there were rock boys from both Norway, Finland and Denmark and from all cities and then there were us from Gothenburg.
But we won that competition. We clearly won that competition convincingly.

GÖSTA:
Tell us a little about the name change.

BOB:
Yes, in that you win such a competition, you get, you could say, a greater responsibility in terms of establishment. Then it got a little more serious. Everything would be more real and it would be stage clothes. The members were seen through, but we couldn’t change guys anyway. We would be a gang then.
And then we called ourselves The Frazers and why we did that I don’t know but we thought – Frazers – it sounded ”rough”. We thought it was a good name for us, because we thought we were rough.
And then if we’re going to change the name to Spotnicks.
We came to Stockholm then because we got in touch with a few people who became interested in Karusell’s record company. We made some tapes, not at Erdmans then, but now Bosse had taken care of this and we made them on Tandberg tape recorders which were later sent up to Karusell in Stockholm.
And they became very interested in how this had been done, because they knew that there was no such equipment in Gothenburg. It was basically only Europafilm that had a recording studio, so they called down and checked.
But they didn’t believe us, they thought we had been somewhere else and done this so ”do you mind if two of us come down here – for a weekend”?
That was the most we wanted, it was for them to come down.
And it was a fun meeting… To see gramophone people being surprised, that was fun. They were almost shocked, I would say.
And then we got an agreement with Karusell and then we later went to Europafilm and started the recordings there. And there was a guy there who was technician at the time – Yes, at the mixer table called Svenbel and he was the one who somehow came up with the name Spotnicks.
But we didn’t find out until afterwards.
I thought Spotnicks was a very strange name. Frazers it was so ingrained in us, and we played a lot in Gothenburg and the surrounding area under the name Frazers and there was a lot in the newspapers about it so we felt it was difficult to change.
It was somehow like changing identities. I mean, we played the same music anyway, huh…
But it became Spotnicks because it was perhaps a more future-oriented name in terms of promotion, more correct and so on… And at the same time the sputnik was the first around the world and it was probably in connection with this that Spotnicks came about.
But it was Svenbel at Europafilm who came up with it.

GÖSTA:
When you were at Olympia, you met a bunch. Which ones?

BOB:
Yes, there we have a picture (then a long answer)

GÖSTA:
What’s going on here?

BOB:
I see we have party pictures there.

GÖSTA:
Memories of Japan?

BOB:
We were in Mexico City playing at a fashionable night club.
Then Roland Ferneborg was also there…

Here Bob talks about finding out that Karelia was climbing the charts in Japan and it was decided to tour there right after Mexico but the story is not reflected in the notes.

BOB:
When we got to Japan, the song had reached number one in Japan.
Yes, that moment it’s so amazing, because you were used to working with music in some way all the time.
When we landed at Haneda Airport, Björn and I sat together, I remember, and then we looked out and there’s this kind of visitor pavilion on top, sort of. And we saw banners with Japanese characters and also in English saying ”Welcome The Spotnicks”.
It’s just that there were so many people, so incredibly many people and Roland got nervous – that the plane would be emptied. And we weren’t allowed to leave until the plane had been emptied and then yes, the carpet was basically rolled out and it was a reception that I can imagine the Beatles had.
I have never seen so many press people in my entire life and so many TV cameras at all.
It was a huge reception and it was like in one go. You had never experienced such a huge thing as this response in Japan.
Then there was VIP for the whole penny… black limousines, hotels, press reception. The whole tour was amazing.

GÖSTA:
Any memories from a concert?

BOB:
Every concert was fantastic.
I know that such a title that we had played for many years as Johnny Guitar.
As a musician, you can do a song so many times it can end up in a certain sloppiness in this.
But when you stand on stage and play that song for the 2000th time, or whatever it may have been, and see Japanese people start crying to this song, then it’s like new, that song Johnny Guitar.
Yes, it was absolutely huge.

Bob tells of a theater when they were lowered hanging on parachute cords but it is not reflected in the notes.

TV-SPECIALEN 1983 (INTERVJUER)

Postat 2023/07/12 av Sören Alverfeldt2023/08/27

Go to English version

Ja just det.

Hur kom ni in på rockmusik?

Ja, men…

Ja, just det. Skivan.

Old Spinning Wheel och Ghostriders In The Sky.

BO:
Rock-Teddy and the Blue Caps.

Berätta om er första skiva The Old Spinning Wheel.

BO:

Men mycket tröttsam…

GÖSTA:
Sen kom det här med rymddräkter. Kan du dra storyn bakom dom?

BO:

BO:

Sen kom polisen in.
