1959 – 1961 The Spotnicks – In The Beginning

De här är de tidigaste inspelningarna (1959 till 61).
Sammanställningen introduceras av den autentiska signalen från den allra första satelliten – Sputnik 1 – som senare kom att bli upphovet till att gruppen fick heta The Spotnicks.

Allt började med The Rebels som bestod av Bo Starander och Björn Thelin och sedermera även Bo Winberg. The Rebels inspelningar gjordes i Erdmanns Musikaffär i Göteborg och graverades på några så kallade stenkakor, endast avsedda för medlemmarna själva. Det är först på senare år som vissa av The Rebels inspelningar har blivit officiellt utgivna.

När Ove Johansson anslöt till gruppen tog man namnet The Frazers.
Enligt en säker källa så gjordes endast en officiellt utgiven inspelning i gruppens dåvarande replokal, en plastfabrik på Mölndalsvägen i Göteborg (söder om Liseberg), när gruppen fortfarande kallade sig för The Frazers och det är låten Home On The Range.
De övriga låtarna från 1960 och 1961 spelades in i Bo Winbergs bostad på Hjulmakaregatan 35 (Kopparslagaregatan) i Göteborg.

För dessa tidiga inspelningar användes bland annat ett par vanliga Tandberg-bandspelare.

Det var när skivbolaget Karusell gav ut deras första skiva (KFF 340) som man ändrade gruppnamnet till The Spotnicks.

Bo Winberg, tillsammans med Peter Winsnes, gjorde tidigt några inspelningar för den finska marknaden och då kallade man sig för The Feenades.

These are the earliest recordings (1959 to 61).
The compilation is introduced by the authentic signal from the very first satellite – Sputnik 1 – which later gave rise to the group being called The Spotnicks.

It all started with The Rebels which consisted of Bo Starander and Björn Thelin and later also Bo Winberg. The Rebel’s recordings were made in Erdmann’s Music Store in Gothenburg and were engraved on some 78 records, intended only for the members themselves. It is only in recent years that some of The Rebel’s recordings have been officially released.

When Ove Johansson joined the group, they took the name The Frazers.
According to a reliable source, only one officially released recording was made in the group’s former rehearsal space, a plastic factory on Mölndalsvägen in Gothenburg, when the group still called themselves The Frazers and it is the song Home On The Range.
The other songs from 1960 and 1961 were recorded in Bo Winberg’s home at Hjulmakaregatan 35 (Kopparslagaregatan) in Gothenburg.

For these early recordings, a couple of standard Tandberg tape recorders were used, among other things.

When the record company Karusell released their first album (KFF 340) they had changed the group name to The Spotnicks.

Bo Winberg, together with Peter Winsnes, made some early recordings for the Finnish market and then called themselves The Feenades.

The Spotnicks andra album, The Spotnicks In Paris ”Dansons avec Les Spotnicks”, spelades in och gavs ut 1963 (undantaget fyra låtar som spelades in 1962).
Under den här perioden producerades många av de hits som följde med i repertoaren ända till slutet.

Här återfinns även en fransk LP och singel med s.k. ”playback-versioner”, utan sologitarr respektive sång.
I skivfodralen fanns nothäfte och sångtexterna för den som ville spela eller sjunga med.

The Spotnicks’ second album, The Spotnicks In Paris ”Dansons avec Les Spotnicks”, was recorded and released in 1963 (with the exception of four songs recorded in 1962).
During this period, many of the hits were produced that followed the repertoire until the end.

Here is also a French LP and single with the so-called ”playback versions”, without solo guitar or vocals.
The record covers contained sheet music and lyrics for those who wanted to play or sing along.

Denna sammanställning är baserad på LP’n The Spotnicks at home in Gothenburg tillsammans två låtar från en singel, några alternativa franska inspelningar samt två trickinspelningar, ursprungligen släppta som Bo Winberg x4+2.
De två sista låtarna kommer från en icke officiell inspelning gjord ”på skoj” i en studio på nöjesfältet Gröna Lund i Stockholm sommaren 1965 med Bo Winberg och Björn Thelin på akustiska gitarrer och Peter Winsnes på piano.
Peter sjunger ”This Train” och Björn ”How Can You Leave Me Like That”.

This is a compilation mainly based upon the LP The Spotnicks at home in Gothenburg together with two songs fom a single, some alternate French recordings and two trick recordings, originally released as Bo Winberg x4+2.
The last two songs comes from an unofficial recording made ’for fun’ in a studio at the amusement park Gröna Lund in Stockholm on summer 1965 with Bo Winberg and Björn Thelin on acoustic guitars and Peter Winsnes on Piano.
Peter sings ’This Train’ and Björn ’How Can You Leave Me Like That’.

De första 14 låtarna är från LP’n The Spotnicks Around The World.
Bland de övriga är några från singlar där Jimmie Nicol är huvudmusikern.
Låten ”Augustin” gavs första gången ut på ett rullband typ Phono-Pop.
”Popsan Signature” är från det svenska TV-programmet ”Popsan” som sändes i tio delar från en studio i Göteborg från oktober till december 1966. Spotnicks spelade in signaturen och var också värd för programmet vid tre tillfällen.
De sista två låtarna är tagningar från en studiosession.

The first 14 songs are from the LP The Spotnicks Around The World.
Among the others are some from singles where Jimmie Nicol is the main musician.
The song ”Augustin” was first released on a Phono-Pop reel tape.
”Popsan Signature” is from the Swedish TV program ”Popsan” which was broadcasted in ten parts from a studio in Gothenburg from October to December 1966. Spotnicks recorded the signature and also hosted the program on three occasions.
The last two songs are recordings from a studio session.

1966 The Spotnicks – Live in Japan

Här är inspelningar från tre olika konserter under The Spotnicks turné i Japan. Dels är det låtarna från den första officiella live-albumet The Spotnicks Live in Japann som spelades in i Osaka Sankei Hall den 18 februari.
Dels är det ett urval av låtar från konserten den 4 mars i Shinjuku Kinokuniya Hall in Tokyo. Det är en privat inspelning som senare kom att släppas på CD i Japan den 1 december 2003.
De sista 6 låtarna är ett urval från en videoinspelning som Roland Ferneborg gjorde under en annan av The Spotnicks konserter i Japan.
Tyvärr är inte datum och plats dokumenterade.
Ljudinspelningen blev digitaliserad av Torgny Palm 2004 men inte på någon officiellt utgiven CD.

Here are recordings from three different concerts during The Spotnick’s tour in Japan.
There are the songs from the very first official live album nThe Spotnicks Live in Japann wich were recorded at Osaka Sankei Hall on February 18.
There are also a selection of songs from the concert held on March 4 in Shinjuku Kinokuniya Hall in Toky.
It is a private recording that became later officially released on CD in Japan on December 1, 2003.
The last 6 songs are a selection from a video recording by Roland Ferneborg at another of The Spotnick’s concerts in Japan.
Unfortunately, dates and locations are not documented.
The sound recording was digitized by Torgny Palm in 2004 but not on any official released CD.

På LP’n Something Like Country medverkar ett antal nya bekantskaper som medmusiker.
Förutom Bo och Magnus Hellsberg medverkar t.ex. Juri Wijk för första gången i gruppen.
Albumet innehåller bl.a. If You Could Read My Mind som kom att användas som signaturmelodi till ett tyskt TV-magasin under OS i München 1972 och som genom detta blev The Spotnicks största hit i Tyskland genom tiderna.
Bo Winberg och The Spotnicks tilldelades bronslejonet av RTL för att vara en av de mest framgångsrika stjärnorna i Radio Luxemburgs ”Hitparade”.

On the LP Something Like Country, a number of new acquaintances participate as musicians.
In addition to Bo and Magnus Hellsberg, e.g. Juri Wijk appears for the firts time in the group.
The album includes the song If You Could Read My Mind, which came to be used as a signature tune to a German TV magazine during the Munich Olympics in 1972 and which thereby became The Spotnick’s biggest hit in Germany of all time.
Bo Winberg and The Spotnicks were awarded the Bronze Lion by RTL for being one of the most successful stars in Radio Luxembourg’s ”Hit Parade”.

1973 – 76 The Spotnicks – Feelings

En ny gruppsammansättning av The Spotnicks med sex medlemmar, varav tre var gitarrister, och med ett nytt modernt ljud, startade 1973 och blev mycket framgångsrikt de följande åren och gjorde massor av konserter främst i Tyskland.
Man spelade också in och gav ut följande låtar.
LP’n Feelings spelades in i Olympic Studios i München i november 1975 och släpptes året därpå i flera länder.
Matz Nilsson och Håkan Mjörnheim ersätt efter en tid av Paulsén respektive Todde Stoor.
Efter inspelningen i Mûnchen stannar Mats Björklund för att jobba som studiemusiker.
1976 var gruppen reducerad till de fyra medlemmarna Bo Winberg, Todde Stoor, Leif Paulsén och Tommy Tausis.

A new group composition of The Spotnicks with six members, three of whom were guitarists, and with a new modern sound, started in 1973 and became very successful the following years and did lots of concerts mainly in Germany.
They also recorded and released the songs below.
The LP Feelings was recorded at Olympic Studios in Munich in November 1975 and released in several countries the following year.
Matz Nilsson and Håkan Mjörnheim were replaced by Paulsén and Todde Stoor after a while.
After the recording session in Munich, Mats Björklund leaves and stort working as a studio musician.
In 1976 the group was reduced to the four members Bo Winberg, Todde Stoor, Leif Paulsén and Tommy Tausis.

1972 The Spotnicks – Today

Efter att ha uppträtt i Westfalen-halle i Dortmund inför 15 000 åskådare i samband med mottagandet av lejonstatyetten spelade Bo Winberg tillsammans dessa musikerna in LP’n Today.
På albumet, som är helt instrumentalt, finns bl.a. låten Jämtländsk Brudmarsch som under senare år försågs med kör i en remixad version gjord av ett svensk företag som bl.a. ägnar sig åt att videosätta svenska traditionella musikstycken.

The Spotnicks: Bo Winberg, Bo Maniette, Matz Nilsson, Lennart Hermansson, Peter Wiberg, Johan Dielmans och Anders Kjellberg.

After performing in Westfalen-halle in Dortmund in front of 15,000 spectators when recieving the Bronze lion statue, Bo Winberg, together with these musicians, recorded the LP’n Today.
The album, which is completely instrumental, includes the song Jämtländsk Brudmarsch, which in recent years was provided with chorus in a remixed version made by a Swedish company which, among other things produce videos to Swedish traditional music pieces.

The Spotnicks spelade på Badawanne Diskotek i Berlin under tre kvällar, 5 – 7 mars, och från inspelningarna av de två senare konserterna valdes 12 låtar ut för att ges ut på LP’n The Spotnicks Live in Berlin ’74.
Några år senare kom ytterligare ett album med samma namn ut med ytterligare 13 spår varav 4 är alternativa versioner av låtar som fanns med på det första albumet och 6 är tidigare opublicerade versioner. De återstående 3 låtarna är samma versioner som gavs ut på det första albumet.

The Spotnicks played at Badawanne Discothek in Berlin for three nights, March 5 – 7, and from the recordings of the two later concerts, 12 songs were selected to be released on the LP The Spotnicks Live in Berlin ’74.
Some years later, another album with the same title came out with another 13 tracks, of which 4 are alternative versions of songs that were included on the first album and 6 previously unpublished versions. The remaining 3 songs are the same versions that were released on the first album.

The ”Original” Spotnicks återförenades för två Lp för skivbolaget Marianne. Detta är den första LP’n The Great Snowman där inspelningarna började redan 1976 och slutfördes året därpå.
Från en studio session kommer en outgiven låt med okänd titel.

The ’Original’ Spotnicks was reunited for two Lp’s on the Marianne label. This is the first LP The Great Snowman which recordings began already 1976 and were completed in 1977.

I slutet av 1982 bildas en ny gruppsammansättning av The Spotnicks som tyvärr bara kommer att jobba ihop under ett par år.
De gjorde ändå på denna korta tid en mängd olika framträdanden i radio och TV i flera europeiska länder och givetvis även i Sverige samt ett otal spelningar.
Svensk TV gjorde även en ”TV-special” om The Spotnicks som även innehöll en livekonsert i TV-studion.
Det här är en sammanställning baserad på albumet In The Middle Of Universe samt några fler låtar som spelas av samma musiker.

At the end of 1982, a new group is formed as The Spotnicks, which unfortunately will only work together for a couple of years.
In this short time, they still made a number of different appearances on radio and TV in several European countries and of course also in Sweden as well as lots of gigs.
Swedish TV also did a ”TV special” about The Spotnicks which also included a live concert in the TV studio.
This is a compilation based on the album In The Middle Of Universe and a few more songs played by the same musicians.

Albumet The Spotnicks – Highway Boogie var det första någonsin som gavs ut på CD med The Spotnicks.
Inspelningarna gjordes av Bo Winberg med hjälp från flera andra Spotnicksmusiker.
Bos dåvarande svärmor Berit, som kallas Dolly, spelar dragspel på den medryckande låten Dolly H (H som i Håkansson).
Här finns också några tagningar från studioarbetet.

Alla låtarna utom en ges ut på olika tyska CD-skivor.
Så skimrande var aldrig havet, eller Everlasting Brightness på engelska, kommer inte ut förrän 2004 tillsammans med boken om The Spotnicks.

Bo Winberg recorded material for the German market together with Lars ”Lim” Moberg and Arne Österlindh among others.

I januari åkte Bo Winberg från Spanien till Stockholm för att att spela in albumet The Spotnicks 1997.
Han gjorde detta tillsammans med i flera av de musiker som medverkade på förra CD’n under ledning av Lennart Sjöholm.
The Spotnicks 1997 innehåller gamla hits i nya och moderna arrangemang.

The Spotnicks: Bo Winberg med studiomusiker (Lennart Sjöholm, Lasse Wellander, Hasse Rosén, Jesper Lindberg, Rutger Gunnarsson och Johan Norgren)

In January, Bo Winberg traveled from Spain to Stockholm to record the 1997 album The Spotnicks.
He did this together with several of the musicians who appeared on the previous CD under the direction of Lennart Sjöholm.
The Spotnicks 1997 contains old hits in new and modern arrangements.

1999 The Spotnicks – Live

The Spotnicks som uppträdande orkester återuppstod när Bo Winberg under 1998 knyter Bo Lander, Ralph Nilsson, Stefan Ericsson och Björn Fryklund till gruppen och därmed startade en ny era med gruppen som kom att vara i ytterligare 20 år.
Sveriges Radio gjorde den 21 maj 1999 en inspelning av The Spotnicks konsert i Jössefors Folkets Hus som mynnade ut dels i ett radioprogram, dels i en CD med titeln The Spotnicks Live 1999.
The Spotnicks Svenska Fan Club producerade även en VHS-video.
Nedanstående sammanställning är en kombination av CD-albumet och VHS-videon.
Fyra av låtarna framförs av de allra första Spotnicks-medlemmarna, alltså den ”riktiga” originalgruppen.
Amapola framförs av alla musikerna tillsammans.

The Spotnicks as a performing orchestra reappeared when Bo Winberg in 1998 recruits Bo Lander, Ralph Nilsson, Stefan Ericsson and Björn Fryklund into the group and then started a new era that lasted for another 20 years.
On 21 May, Sveriges Radio recorded The Spotnicks’ concert in Jössefors Folkets Hus, which culminated in a radio program and a CD entitled The Spotnicks Live in 1999.
The Spotnicks Swedish Fan Club also produced a VHS video.
The compilation below is a combination of the CD album and the VHS video.
Four of the songs are performed by the very first Spotnicks members, ie the ”real” original group.

2002 The Spotnicks – The Other Side Of The Moon

CD’n med namnet “The Otherside (Of The Moon)” gavs ut av Bo Winbergs och Bob Landers gemensamma skivbolag WISTA & The Spotnicks Records.
Albumet innehåller bl.a. några sånglåtar på svenska. Bo Winberg är sångsolist – vilket inte tillhör vanligheterna – på två av låtarna; ”Det var länge se jag plocka några blommor” och ”Gitarren i himlen”.
Flera musiker medverkade fast inte alla på samma låtar.

The Spotnicks: Bo Winberg, Bob Lander, Douglas Möller, Tomas Olsson, Lasse Lindberg, Arne Österlindh (spår 2, 4 och 12), Peter Wiberg (spår 5 och 7), Matz Nilsson (spår 5), Bernt Andersson (spår 11), Bengan Blomgren (spår 3) och Olle Niklasson (spår 9) samt Jennie Lindgren och Elenor Nilsson (kör på spår 2 och 8)

Här återfinns även tre låtar från det tidigare albumet The Spotnicks Live 1999 eftersom det är studioinspelningar som enligt mig passar bättre in i denna sammanställning.

Dessutom är det tre låtar från en CD-singel – Angel – som gavs ut på skivbolaget Riverside Records till förmån för flyktingar från Kosovo och som bl.a. innehåller den första versionen av The Otherside.

The CD called ”The Otherside (Of The Moon)” was released by Bo Winberg’s and Bob Landers’ joint record label WISTA & The Spotnicks Records.
The album contains i.a. some song songs in Swedish. Bo Winberg is the vocal soloist – which is not commonplace – on two of the songs; ”Det var länge se jag plocka några blommor” och ”Gitarren i himlen”.
Several musicians participated but not all perform on the same songs.

Under några dagar i augusti spelas ett nytt album in i Nacksving Studios i Göteborg.
Albumet ges namnet ”The Spotnicks – Still on Tour”.

Låten ” Lonely Woman” är från början en demo för testning till Melodifestivalen.
Den gavs senare ut på samlingsalbumet 40 vocals.

2011 The Spotnicks – The Real Amapola

I januari och februari repeterade och spelade The Spotnicks in det som kom att bli gruppens allra sista album och det gjordes av den konstellation som har verkat under längst sammanhängande tid av alla de gruppsammansättningar som har funnits under alla år. CD’n får namnet ”The ’Real’ Amapola” efter titellåten.
Låt nr 16 – The Midnight Sun Never Set – spelades in 2009 av samma musiker i Stephan Möllers hemmastudio i Jönköping.

Den allra sista låten var ett beställningverk för en reklamkampanj för Iggesund Paperboard med en 60-årshyllning av deras produkt Invercote.
Hyllningen inkluderade denna nya låt – Invercote Theme – från Sveriges hetaste rockgrupp det år då Invercote föddes: The Spotnicks.
Iggesund Paperboard skrev såhär i sin folder: ”Invercote Theme är skriven och spelad av ”pojkarna” som då uppträdde i rymddräkter och vars speciella rymd-sound lade hela Världen för deras fötter”.

In January and February, The Spotnicks rehearsed and recorded what would become the group’s very last album, and this was done by the constellation that has worked togehter for the longest continuous time of all the group compositions that have existed over the years. The CD is named ”The ’Real’ Amapola” after the title track.
Song number 16 – The Midnight Sun Never Set – is recorded by the same musicians at Stephan Möller’s home studio in Jönköping.

The very last song was a commissioned work for an advertising campaign for Iggesund Paperboard with a 60th anniversary of their product Invercote.
The tribute included this new song – Invercote Theme – from Sweden’s hottest rock group the year Invercote was born: The Spotnicks.
Iggesund Paperboard wrote in its folder: ”Invercote Theme is written and played by the ”boys” who then appeared in spacesuits and whose special space sound put the whole World at their feet”.

Det här live-albumet gavs ut efter att The Spotnicks hade avslutat sin karriär och postumt efter att både Bo Winberg och Bob Lander hade gått bort.
Inspelningen är gjord den 28 augusti 2004 i Tallosaulan i Katrineholm av Sveriges Radio för programmet ”P4 live”.
Spellistan i radioprogrammet skiljer sig något i förhållande till denna CD från Magic Records.

Bonusspåret nr 21 kommer från en inspelning i Shinjuku ’Kinokuniya Hall’ i Tokyo den 4 mars 1966, tidigare utgiven på CD:n Hibino Music Japan – HBN 4001.

This live album was released after The Spotnicks had ended their career and posthumously after both Bo Winberg and Bob Lander had passed away.
The recording was made on 28 August 2004 in Katrineholm by Swedish Radio for the program ”P4 live”.
The setlist on the radio show is slightly different compared to this CD from Magic Records.

In October 2023 it has been over three years since Bo Winberg and Bob Lander left the earthly life and like the previous album, this original CD is also produced and released posthumously.
